Natreon’s Capros shown to have protective effects against Myocardial Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury

New Rat Study from University of Connecticut Medical Center

New Brunswick, NJ – Natreon’s Capros®, a clinically studied and standardized aqueous extract of Phyllanthus emblica, has shown to preserve cardiac tissue during ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats according to a study just published in The Journal of Physiology and Biochemistry.

This study was designed to examine the effect of Capros® treatment on myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) and identify the molecular targets and its underlying mechanisms. Experimental animals were divided into four groups: control sham (CS), P. emblica sham (PS), control I/R (CIR), and P. emblica I/R (PIR). Rats in the P. emblica groups were gavaged with aqueous P. emblica solution (100 mg/kg body weight) for 30 days. After 30 days of gavaging, the I/R group underwent I/R surgery (45-min ischemia) followed by 4 or 30 days of reperfusion. Rats in the sham group underwent surgery without ligation. Left ventricular tissue samples, 4 and 30 days after I/R, were used for Western blot analysis and immunohistochemistry, respectively. Echocardiography showed increased ejection fraction and fractional shortening and decreased left ventricular internal diameter in experimental subjects compared to controls. There was decreased fibrosis in P. emblica-treated rats compared to controls. The results of this study indicate that P. emblica is capable of upregulating the PI3K/Akt/GSK3β/β-catenin cardioprotective pathway, thereby preserving cardiac tissue during ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Capros® is a FDA GRAS approved, non-GMO, vegetarian ingredient derived from the edible fruits of Phyllanthus emblica. Previous randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled studies with Capros® treatment have shown significant benefits for cardiovascular health. These studies showed significant improvements in endothelial function by increasing production of nitric oxide by more than 50%. A significant decrease in the inflammation biomarker hsCRP by more than 50% was noted in these studies. In addition, triglyceride levels decreased, LDL decreased, and HDL increased in patients treated with Capros®. Capros® is a super antioxidant that is water soluble and stable; thus, it is an ideal product for addition into hot and cold beverages and functional foods.

First Evidence of NEM’s Chondroprotective Effects Published

St. Charles, MO – Stratum Nutrition in collaboration with the Traditional & Biomedical Research Center within Daejeon University and Ju Yeong NS Co., Ltd., is pleased to announce a new research study on NEM® brand eggshell membrane has been published. The study further validates NEM’s mechanism of action and reveals exciting insights on NEM’s ability to support joint health.

Researchers evaluated three doses of NEM (including the human equivalent dose of 52 mg/kg) in a rat model of osteoarthritis. As in prior research, NEM again demonstrated powerful anti-inflammatory effects, in this case on the inflammation biomarkers Interleukin 1-beta (IL-1β) and C-Reactive Protein (CRP). And, for the first time, chondroprotective effects were revealed from NEM treatment. NEM was found to reduce circulating cartilage degrading enzymes known as Matrix Metalloproteinases (MMPs) and was shown to reduce serum levels of the cartilage degradation biomarker CTX-II. Importantly, the demonstrated chondroprotective effects were validated through histology, wherein a blinded pathologist evaluated cartilage thickness and joint space width both microscopically and via micro CT scan. The results of this study were published in the August issue of the Journal of Nutrition and Health (DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4163/jnh.2015.48.4.310).

Frutarom acquires Spanish company Nutrafur

Another acquisition in Natural Ingredients – continues strengthening its position as a leading global player in this field

Herzliya, Israel – Frutarom Industries Ltd. (“Nutrafur”) based on a company value of approx. US$ 14.5 million (€ 13.1 million). The transaction was completed upon signing and is being financed with bank credit. Nutrafur specializes in the research and development, manufacture, and sales and marketing of specialty natural plant extracts bearing antioxidant properties or scientifically proven healthy qualities and supported by clinical studies for the food, pharma, nutraceutical and cosmetics markets. Nutrafur sales for the 12-month period ending June 2015 amounted to approx. US$ 13 million. The value of Nutrafur’s net assets for 30.6.15 on a cash-free debt-free basis stood at approximately US$ 11.4 million.

Nutrafur has accumulated many years of know-how and excellent capabilities in the extraction of active components from vegetation, particularly rosemary, olive and citrus. Nutrafur products blend in well with Frutarom’s portfolio of natural ingredient solutions and will help expand Frutarom’s lineup of natural products for both food and health products. Nutrafur’s activity in the field of antioxidants, particularly in the area of food preservation and protection and extending of shelf life based on natural components, establishes even further Frutarom’s portfolio of solutions in this field which has been significantly strengthened following its acquisitions earlier this year of Vitiva and Ingrenat which are also active in this growing field. Active antioxidant

Sabinsa’s Utah Facility receives Foreign Site Registration number from Canada

Augments Sabinsa’s Existing Canadian Master Files and 13 Natural Product Numbers

Sabinsa Corporation has received a Foreign Site Registration Number for its Payson, Utah finished product manufacturing facility from Health Canada’s Natural and Non Prescription Health Product Directorate (NNHPD). This Sabinsa manufacturing plant was recently assessed by NHPD for Natural Health Product’s GMP standards and quality system and was deemed as compliant for manufacturing health products. Foreign Sire Reference Number 5000311 allows Sabinsa to manufacture Natural Health Products for the Canadian market in the Utah facility. The Utah facility is also NSF certified.

Sabinsa Corporation already had multiple Masterfiles and Natural Product Numbers (NPN) approved for use in Canada, which allows several of its extracts in the form of finished products in the Canadian market. LactoSpore®, BioPerine®, Curcumin C3 Complex®, Curcumin C3 Reduct® and ForsLean®, among Sabinsa’s proprietary products, are available for Letter of Access requests.
