Curcumin C3 Complex to be safe adjunct to Folfox Chemotherapy

UK STUDY SHOWS SABINSA’S CURCUMIN C3 COMPLEX TO BE SAFE ADJUNCT TO, AND ENHANCE EFFICACY OF, FOLFOX CHEMOTHERAPY

East Windsor, NJ – Curcumin may provide added benefit in subsets of patients when administered with FOLFOX standard chemotherapy, and is a well-tolerated chemotherapy adjunct, concluded a study conducted by researchers at Leicester University, UK and published in the journal Cancer Letters.

The study, “Curcumin inhibits cancer stem cell phenotypes in ex vivo models of colorectal liver metastases, and is clinically safe and tolerable in combination with FOLFOX chemotherapy utilized Sabinsa’s Curcumin C3 Complex patented curcumin extract”, (August 10, 2015 Volume 364, Issue 2, Pages 135 – 141), which is available to anyone via Open Access funded by Cancer Research UK (http://dx.doi.org/doi:10.1016/j.canlet.2015.05.005).

Colorectal cancer patients have a greater risk of cancer spreading to the liver. Sabinsa’s Curcumin C3 Complex® was found by the researchers to be safe and tolerable as an acceptable daily adjunct in a phase I dose escalation study on colorectal cancer with liver metastatic spread. In the trial protocol Curcumin C3 Complex® was tolerated well with 2g/day dose with standard FOLFOX chemotherapy (combination of 5-Flurouracil and Oxaliplatin, two chemotherapeutic drugs). The researchers wrote that the addition of curcumin to FOLFOX treatment was well tolerated with compliance rate of 93.8%.

The researchers further found that the addition of curcumin to FOLFOX-based chemotherapy enhanced efficacy as judged from studies done on patient-derived colorectal liver metastasis indicating a promise for such treatment in situations wherein colon cancer can spread to the liver. The researchers demonstrated that curcumin alone and in combination with chemotherapy exerted anti-proliferative and pro-apoptic (killing) effects on cancer stem cells derived from the patients. The researchers plan to extend the studies further based on the promising results obtained.

“This commitment to research for both Curcumin and in particular for Sabinsa’s C3 Complex is another reason for why, time and again, researchers, marketing companies and customers choose our ingredient,” said Shaheen Majeed, Marketing Director, Sabinsa. “This is one among half a dozen studies where Curcumin C3 Complex® has been safe and effectively used to improve chemotherapeutic activity.”

This research was supported by two studentships from Hope Against Cancer, Leicester, UK, The Royal College of Surgeons (Eng), The Bowel Disease Research Foundation, by Cancer Research UK on a programme grant

[ C325/A13101 ] and by Cancer Research UK in conjunction with the Department of Health on an Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre grant [ C325/A15575 ].

Combination Setria® Glutathione and L-Citrulline Supplementation Proven to Increase Post-Exercise Benefits

Study Participants Showed Increased and Longer-Lasting Level of Nitric Oxide After Only Seven Days

New York – A new randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, human clinical trial published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition found, for the first time, that one week of daily oral supplementation with 200 mg of Setria® Glutathione and 2 grams of L-citrulline enhanced nitric oxide (NO) levels.1 Setria® Glutathione led to longer lasting levels of NO by preventing its oxidative reaction when ingested in combination with L-citrulline.1

The study, led by Dr. Darryn Willoughby of Baylor University, was designed to determine the effectiveness of Glutathione and L-citrulline on improving exercise performance, based on markers of nitric oxide (NO) synthesis.1 L-citrulline is known to impact NO levels as it’s converted to L-arginine, which synthesizes NO when ingested. However, L-citrulline supplementation alone has shown conflicting results in reference to improving exercise performance. Previous studies have indicated that Glutathione stimulates L-arginine turnover and increases nitric oxide synthase (NOS). These results suggest that it may play a role in preventing oxidative reaction and sustaining the release of NO, however; its effectiveness, particularly in combination with L-citrulline, had not been determined prior to this study.

Results from the study found that after seven days of oral supplementation, levels of nitric oxide and NOx in the L-citrulline and Glutathione group showed a measured increase 30 minutes post exercise when compared to the placebo group.1 Participants of the study included 60 healthy, resistance-trained males aged 18 – 30, with a body mass index between 18.5 – 30 kg/m2, divided into four groups that received either a placebo, Setria® Glutathione (1 gram), L-citrulline (2 grams), or a combination of Setria® Glutathione (200mg) and L-citrulline (2 grams) for one week.1 To measure the impact of supplementation or placebo during the seven day study period, the groups were evaluated after completing resistance exercise sessions, including three sets of 15 repetitions at 70 – 75 percent of the estimated 1-RM involving the elbow flexors.1 Participants were assessed on their maximum muscular strength at the beginning of the study, prior to supplementation and following three sets of fifteen repetitions of the elbow flexion exercise.1

“In this study, we were able to determine that combining Setria® Glutathione with L-citrulline not only increased blood levels of nitrite and NOx, but sustained the increases for a longer period of time, compared to placebo,” said Dr. Willoughby, Baylor University, associate professor, Health, Human Performance, and Recreation, director, Exercise and Biochemical Nutritional Lab. “The results of this first-of-its kind study indicate that Setria® Glutathione and L-citrulline may play a role in muscle protein synthesis and muscle performance when combined with resistance exercise.”

“In addition to its immune health benefits, Setria® Glutathione is known to work in the body to eliminate toxic chemicals, maintain cell proteins and act as an antioxidant,” said Danielle Citrolo, registered pharmacist and manager of technical services for Kyowa Hakko USA. “With its reputation as the ‘master antioxidant,’ due in part to its role in combatting oxidative stress, it’s encouraging to see the benefits of Setria® Glutathione supplementation extended to slowing the release of and sustaining the body’s levels of NO with L-citrulline. These results give consumers a research-backed approach to increasing the effectiveness of resistance training with regular intake of L-citrulline and Setria® Glutathione oral supplements.”

In the same paper, similar results were seen in phase one in-vitro (cell culture) and phase two rodent studies. These results combined with the human clinical trial data shows that the combination of Setria® Glutathione and L-citrulline has the same positive, long lasting benefit of enhancing nitric oxide across a variety of subjects, as well as blood levels of NOx.

Sabinsa takes legal action against Curcumin Adulteration

Bangalore, India – As the opening salvo in a campaign against adulteration of Curcumin, Sabinsa Corp has filed criminal complaint against Bayir Extracts Private Limited, Bangalore, India for knowingly supplying adulterated Turmeric Oleoresin with a forged Certificate of Analysis. The filed court papers from Sabinsa and its sister company Sami Labs are requesting a Cease and Investigation into this matter.

The Complaint was filed with the Honorable VII Additional Chief Magistrate, Bangalore under the Code of Criminal Procedure, registered with the court, and referred to the Peenya Police department for further proceedings.

Results of radiocarbon testing by University of Georgia Center for Applied Isotope Studies on commercially available samples of Curcumin sold by Bayir for export to the US determined that the material was 43% synthetic.

FDA views synthetic versions of natural botanical compounds to be different from the botanical itself, thus a supplier of such material would be required to file an NDI notification with FDA, including proof of safety, for the products to be legally sold in the US.

According to Sabinsa founder Dr. Muhammed Majeed some American companies either unknowingly or with the intention of saving money buy these cheaper synthetic materials labeled as natural products. He went on to explain that the natural product may have distinctively different pharmacological activities compared to synthetically made Curcuminoid composition.

As the industry gets more serious about quality issues, identifying synthetic versions of herbal products becomes crucial. The obvious question is “what was it synthesized from? What chemicals were used, and in what process? How do you know it is safe for consumption by humans?” If a company is selling synthetic Curcumin, and not identifying that some or all of it was synthetically derived, that lack of transparency is not only misleading consumers who think they are taking a product derived from turmeric root, but has the potential to hurt people.

Synthetic copies are, however, difficult to trace in a product using routine analysis. Plant-derived products can be distinguished from synthetic products by their content of natural carbon activity. The use of DNA testing for herbal extracts is debatable, however we know the DNA technique fails when it comes to finding adulteration with synthetic material. Therefore identification and quantification of radiocarbon in these cases provides an accurate way to detect adulteration.

“With FDA requiring the dietary supplement manufacturing companies to test raw material in their products, the amount of active compounds in them have come under scrutiny for label claims,” said Dr. Majeed “In the case of turmeric, as sales have grown adulteration has become a problem because natural sourced, good quality turmeric is expensive. Unfortunately some suppliers find it easy to adulterate the plant material with cheaper synthetic material.”

Sabinsa is evaluating other steps to combat adulteration in the Curcumin market. “As the pioneer in Curcumin supply, Sabinsa has a vested interest protecting the integrity of the Curcumin market,” said Shaheen Majeed, Sabinsa’s Marketing Director. “The vast majority of published clinical studies on Curcumin are done using our C3 Complex ingredient, and that robust body of science has helped mainstream Curcumin products. We intend to ensure that consumers are getting what they expect when they take Curcumin.”

The New York Attorney General’s action earlier this year and resulting inundation of negative media coverage brought quality issues in the industry to the forefront, making it essential that the industry polices itself more actively. It is responsibility of the industry to raise standards on testing procedures to eliminate such adulteration by using the most appropriate and best available technologies and also create more robust supply chain management and control procedures to avoid such adulteration in the raw material stage.

Sustamine L-Alanyl-L-Glutamine may reduce muscle protein breakdown after resistance exercise

Sustamine® taken post exercise might reduce muscle protein breakdown

New York City – A University of Texas at Austin study showed taking Sustamine® L-Alanyl-L-Glutamine inhibits signaling proteins that activate protein degradation, which helps to maximize muscle protein build-up after resistance exercise. ¹

The study published April 3rd in the Journal Amino Acids, included 89 male Spraque-Dawley rats 2-3 months of age who performed resistance exercise. Immediately post exercise, the rats were given either whey protein (.4g/kg), low-dose Sustamine (.1g/kg), high-dose Sustamine (.5g/kg) or placebo, in random order. Sixteen rats were used as sedentary controls.

The primary findings were that “Sustamine® altered, immediately post exercise the phosphorylation state of signaling proteins in a manner that theoretically should reduce muscle protein breakdown, while whey protein accelerated the phosphorylation of proteins in the mTOR-dependent signaling pathway thereby theoretically activating muscle protein synthesis.”

Sustamine® is a dipeptide of glutamine that provides several substantial benefits such as enhanced recovery, immune system support, and increased metabolic rate. This was one of the first studies to demonstrate its benefit on inhibiting muscle protein breakdown.

About Sustamine®
Sustamine® L-Alanyl-L-Glutamine is vegetarian, allergen-free and the only GRAS L-Alanyl-L-Glutamine, Sustamine® is also tasteless, odorless, and stable in liquids. Sustamine® is a dietary supplement and an ingredient used in food and beverages.

Sustamine® is an ingredient that works on multiple levels to help rehydrate the body and sustain energy levels during exertion. Sustamine® combines L-Glutamine (the most important amino acid for stimulating muscle protein synthesis) and L-Alanine (an amino acid needed for rebuilding your body’s glycogen stores). Sustamine enhances performance and recovery in three primary ways. It helps:

  • Replace lost electrolytes and fluids
  • Repair damaged muscle proteins
  • Refill the body’s energy stores
