Americans Fear Mental Deterioration over Physical Decline

Brain Health Awareness Week, Cognizin® Citicoline Releases Consumer Brain Health Survey Results

NEW YORK  – To bring much-needed attention to Brain Health Awareness Week (March 16 – 22, 2015), Cognizin® – an ultra-pure, allergen-free form of the brain nutrient citicoline – today released national survey data that sheds light on consumer concerns related to brain health and function. Among the notable results, the survey found that 57 percent of Americans fear reduction in brain function more than physical decline (43 percent).1 Additionally, more than half (54 percent) of survey respondents admit to having trouble remembering names, while 30 percent admit to not remembering friends’ or family members’ birthdays. The survey also showed forgetfulness is prevalent in younger Americans. The majority of millennials (59 percent) report frequent forgetfulness during their morning routines, with most forgetting keys (32 percent), cell phones (28 percent), and to turn off appliances (21 percent).1

Thankfully, there are a variety of ways to combat cognitive decline. According to leading neuroscientist, Dr. Deborah Yurgelun-Todd, diet and exercise are two of the best ways to care for the brain. “Individuals should establish good brain health habits like eating healthy foods with omega-3 fatty acids – monounsaturated fatty acids have been found to deliver nutrients to the brain – and staying active, exercising to reduce stress and tension.”

Dr. Deborah Yurgelun-Todd is a leading researcher and professor at the Brain Institute at the University of Utah. She has more than 20 years of experience leading brain health research, using the most advanced tools in the U.S. In addition to studying healthy lifestyle habits that impact brain health, Dr. Yurgelun-Todd is one of only 5 researchers in the U.S. who has studied the brain nutrient citicoline. In fact, her in-depth citicoline studies account for one-tenth of her total body of published research. Dr. Yurgelun–Todd’s most recently published citicoline study found that by supplementing with Cognizin® citicoline, over the course of six weeks, study participants made 28 percent fewer commission errors during memory recall tests.2 In a separate study, Dr. Yurgelun–Todd saw an increase in the formation of brain membranes by 35 percent and restoration of brain energy by 13.6 percent.3 “This study shows the significant positive effects that Cognizin® citicoline can bring to healthy individuals who decide to use citicoline as a daily supplement,” said Dr. Yurgelun-Todd.

Citicoline is referred to by the scientific community as a “brain nutrient” because it aids the production of a critical building block in brain cells. While the brain produces its own levels of citicoline naturally – to protect its cell membranes’ integrity and help ward off disease – studies show that oral supplementation of citicoline allows for improved transport of critical nutrients and signal-sending neurotransmitters in the brain.

Remarkably, consumer awareness of the brain nutrient citicoline remains low despite years of positive research, including a study published in the international, peer-reviewed journal, Methods and Findings in Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology, which found that citicoline improved memory deficits in the elderly. In the placebo-controlled study, a group of elderly subjects who exhibited memory deficits (without dementia) were observed after administration of 1,000 mg and 500 mg of citicoline. After only a four-week administration period, results indicated that citicoline improved memory in free recall tasks and resulted in significant improvement in word recall. 4

In a separate study, also conducted by Dr. Yurgelun-Todd, Cognizin® citicoline, over a 28 day supplementation period, produced improved cognitive scores on attention and performance in the study participants. The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study included 60 healthy adult women, aged 40 to 60, using a daily oral supplement of 250 or 500 mg and was published in Food and Nutrition Sciences.3

Dr. Yurgelun –Todd notes that citicoline supplementation is another way consumers can positively impact their overall brain health. “Cognizin® citicoline is a powerful, well-researched supplement that is already naturally produced in the brain,” she said. “It plays a major role in healthy brain function – especially when it comes to boosting memory and concentration.”

Although Cognizin® national survey results reveal Americans’ enduring fear of mental decline, this Brain Health Awareness Week, consumers are empowered to support sustained mental effort and boost healthy brain functions like memory, focus and concentration, through daily supplementation of the powerful, naturally occurring “brain nutrient” Cognizin® citicoline.

About Cognizin® Citicoline
Cognizin is a branded form of citicoline, a natural substance found in every cell of the body and especially vital to brain health. Citicoline is broken down during intestinal absorption and, after passing through the blood/brain barrier, is reconstituted in the brain as citicoline. Citicoline is a water-soluble compound that supplies precursors for the synthesis of phospholipids, including phosphatidyl-choline, a major constituent of brain tissue; helps maintain normal levels of acetylcholine, a chemical that regulates memory and cognitive function; enhances communication between neurons; supports visual function; protects neural structures from free radical damage; enhances metabolism and healthy brain activity; and helps sustain healthy cellular mitochondria for sustained energy. Cognizin is also highly stable, GRAS, ultra-pure and allergen-free. For more information on Cognizin, visit http://www.cognizin.com/.

Sabinsa Curcumin C3 Complex Patent Successfully Defended

East Windsor, N.J. – Sabinsa Corporation, the world leader in Curcumin and other fine ingredients for the dietary supplement industry, has successfully concluded its Patent Infringement lawsuit against Prakruti Products Private Limited. A proposed Final Consent Judgment, agreed by the parties, was submitted to the United States District Court in New Jersey on February 18, 2015.

The lawsuit, filed in the US District Court, New Jersey on July 30, 2014, alleged Prakruti was selling products that infringed upon Sabinsa’s Curcumin C3 Complex® US Patent 5,861,415, which protects compositions, methods of use, and methods of extraction of a nutritional supplement in the US.

In addition to any undisclosed monetary settlement, Prakruti has agreed to discontinue any and all future sales of Curcumin to outside distribution. The proposed Final Consent Judgment stipulates that the ’415 Patent was valid, enforceable, and properly issued by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Sabinsa has patents related to Curcumin both in the United States and Europe. In the United States, Sabinsa continues to litigate the willful infringement of the ’415 patent by HerbaKraft, Inc., NutriBioLink LLC, and Olive Lifesciences Private Limited. In Germany, Sabinsa continues to litigate a European Curcumin patent infringed by Olive Lifesciences.

“Both sides of this suit favored resolution and came to terms that were more than amicable, while the agreement also sustains Sabinsa’s Curcumin patent to the highest degree,” said Sabinsa Founder Dr. Muhammed Majeed. “This settlement sends a clear message to all suppliers on foreign soil that Sabinsa is very serious about defending its’ patents. This win clearly shows that sitting in India while violating our Curcumin patent, does not mean you can escape IP theft consequences. We also see this as a win for our customers and their consumers alike, because the Curcumin C3 Complex® brand has been defended and protected.”

“The consent judgment should serve as a warning to those businesses that trade on Sabinsa’s efforts, investments, and innovations,” said James H. Hulme, Partner, Arent Fox LLP, the attorney who represents Sabinsa in IP infringement matters. ”If you infringe on Sabinsa’s intellectual property, you will be called to account in a court of law.”

Because of Sabinsa’s patent other companies can certainly sell a variety of Curcumin products, however they may not sell copy cat versions of Sabinsa’s unique composition ratio, nor market it for its antioxidant use, nor use the Ethyl Acetate extraction method developed by Sabinsa and outlined in Sabinsa’s patent.

Curcumin C3 Complex® is a Registered Trademark and Patented product of Sabinsa Corp., and is protected under U.S. Patent No. 5,861,415, and International Patents and Patents Pending. The name C3 Complex was chosen to represent the ingredient’s three main chemical compounds: Curcumin, Demethoxycurcumin & Bisdemethoxycurcumin, collectively known as Curcuminoids. Curcumin C3 Complex® is a specific mixture of Curcuminoids, making it a unique form of Curcumin quite different from generic Curcumin extracts. It has been used in more clinical studies than any other Curcumin ingredient in the world. For more information, visit www.sabinsa.com and www.curcuminoids.com.

Additional Insights Discovered for NEM’s Mechanism of Action

Carthage, MO USA – Stratum Nutrition announces newly published support for NEM®, manufactured by partner ESM Technologies, evaluating the effects of various manufacturing methods for eggshell membrane products. Researchers at ESM Technologies feel this new information provides additional insights into the mechanism of action for their NEM® brand eggshell membrane ingredient for joint health.

In collaboration with the Jordan Valley Innovation Center within Missouri State University, the scientists evaluated three different hydrolyzates of eggshell membrane (fermentation, enzymatic, or chemical) in cell cultures of two different types of human immune cells. All three hydrolyzates were found to activate the gene transcription factor NF-kB, although the chemical hydrolyzate was about 10-fold less effective versus the fermentation and enzymatic hydrolyzates. NF-kB plays a fundamental role in the functioning of the immune system and occurs very early in the inflammatory cascade. Dysregulation of NF-kB has been implicated in the development of a number of classical inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, and inflammatory bowel disease. Interestingly, NF-kB dysregulation has also been associated with diseases such as diabetes, Alzheimer’s Disease, and multiple sclerosis which are not traditionally thought of as inflammatory in nature.

“It’s always rewarding to gain insight into the observed efficacy of one of our ingredients through fundamental research, particularly when this leads to the potential for new intellectual property,” commented Dr. Kevin J. Ruff, Director of Scientific & Regulatory Affairs for ESM Technologies, the manufacturer of NEM®. The results of these studies were published in the February issue of the Journal of Inflammation Research (DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.2147/JIR.S78118).

This study, along with additional published studies, show further substantiation for NEM® supporting a healthy inflammatory response. For more information on this new published data, please contact Dr. Kevin Ruff at kruff@esmingredients.com.

Nature’s Answer Introduces Brocco-Glutathione with Setria Glutathione

Made From Organic Broccoli, Supplement Increases the Body’s Defenses*

New York City, NY  – Nature’s Answer has found a way to get broccoli into peoples’ diets, even if they don’t like the vegetable steamed, boiled, or baked.

Brocco-Glutathione™ is made with organic broccoli sprouts, which have been show to supply the body with up to 100 times more glucoraphanin than mature broccoli. It’s a precursor to sulforaphane, which activates the body’s cells to increase glutathione levels.*

That’s great news for Brocco-Glutathione users since each capsule also contains 250 mg of Setria® Glutathione, a brand of glutathione – called nature’s “master antioxidant” – that replenishes the body’s stores while also protecting cells from oxidative stress and harmful toxins.*

As people grow older, the body’s natural antioxidant stores are depleted and overall health and wellness can suffer. Setria® Glutathione has been shown to decrease oxidative stress, increase natural killer cells, and significantly boost glutathione levels.*

Fytexia releases new delivery forms for Sinetrol

Fytexia answers demand for new delivery forms by re-flavoring fat loss ingredient Sinetrol.

French-based supplier Fytexia releases Sinetrol XPur EZ, a new grade of its flagship lipolysis enhancer by masking the natural bitterness of citrus polyphenols to create new possibilities for formulators.

The company initiated this project as an answer to a growing customer demand to go beyond the traditional delivery forms of weight management supplements – capsules and tablets. Innovation teams increasingly look at other product formats to target ways of valuing natural fat burning solutions. These include segments such as sports nutrition where powders are more frequent; or international markets where supplements are taken differently, or simply creating new opportunities in the diet supplement arena.

Catching these opportunities used to be a challenge with the original version of Sinetrol. As it grew into one of the leading fat burners worldwide, companies wanting to use it in products such as powders or liquids frequently faced the issue of bitterness. The active core of Sinetrol is a proprietary combination of citrus extracts standardized for flavanones – a sub category of flavonoids. This blend was demonstrated in 2 published clinical studies to help increase lipolysis and visibly reduce body fat mass. The problem is that these flavanones are bitter by nature, as are all polyphenols.

Fytexia’s R&D has created Sinetrol XPur EZ by keeping the same active combination as in Sinetrol and completing it with a mix of natural flavors to mask the bitterness. The resulting blend is much easier to incorporate into powders or liquid concentrates, creating a new scope of formulation possibilities. With an active dosage only slightly increased from 0.9g to 1.4g per day, it can be added to stick-packs, protein shakes or instant hot drinks, by itself or with other ingredients and flavors.

This new solution immediately triggered the interest of Fytexia’s customers, particularly those for whom instant powders and liquids represent an important share of business. As the company just announced the launch, new products using Sinetrol XPur EZ are already in development. Based on this foreseen high success, the company’s ambition is to increase the reach of Sinetrol’s success to new market segments and to confirm its position as a leading fat loss solution worldwide.
For more details, please contact Fytexia at contact@fytexia.com
